Dr Z Im? trying to charge a heat pump in the winter with r22. Its about 40 degrees outside. Ive gotten? about half the amount of r22 needed into the system, but the defrost is kicking on now and shutting off the compressor. Can you give me some advise please. Im still green behind the ears!

I'm learning refrigeration repair for the company I work for. We refurbish used Soft serve ice cream machines. We rebuild water cooled and air cooled units. When pressure is highor low in the water cooled unit we adjust the water valve to achieve pressure but in the air cooled units I'm unsure of what to do to get the right pressure. I don't know how to adjust it if its even possible. Blower works fine and? condenser is clean

@dianemarie909 scale counts backwards because its a scale and you are removing weight from it as you charge your system. What happens when you remove weight from a scale? The number goes down right? And if you start at zero then it wil go into the negative. ?

@blissJesus1 Sorry I don't? have anything on water source heat pumps. Just think of the system as sort of like a chiller with a cooling tower. The biggest pain in the ass about taking care of that type of system is having to maintain the cooling tower and the water loop water chemistry and piping. The heat pump is a lot like a swimming pool water heater.

@DrZarkloff Most of the pumps were 500hp. The blowers for the activated sludge were 2500hp.You get just two pumps starting at the same time plus a blower, power consumption really hit a spike. The way we were charged is? between certain hours which were 6am to 9pm we were billed at the rate of the highest spike for that day. Flow always picks up around 9am and usually did not drop unitl after10 at night. Sequencing of equipment coming on was planned as well to reduce costs.

Those WERE some good answers to my questions. ? I worked for 40 years in watewater and as I was retiring we were converting to soft starts on all of our pumps, and air compressors. Didn't stay long enough to find out how well they were working. I didn't want to stay any longer. The main reason for converting was we were trying to stop big spikes in power consumption. Thanks for this video.

Interesting concept! I emailed Hyper Engineering asking for life extension data on the compressor and main contactor when using the Sure-Start. My question is whether the contactor inside the Sure-Start is a? solid-state relay, or just another mechanical contactor, with the same flaws as the A/C's main contactor.

Dr. Z, I gave the board to my boss today. He saw no visible damage on it and concluded that it is probably the relay, and because? he was in electronics for ten years, assured me he can and will be replacing the relay on the board. He said it like it was easy as changing a run capacitor or something. The solder gun has a vaccum on it, and pulls up the solder, when melted. Then the relay just falls out, and he puts the replacement relay in and solders it. Whala, good as new! We'll see

@blissJesus1 Is the line voltage 240V or 208V? If you have 208V and if the control transformer is set up on the 240V tap then you could be getting 21V instead of 24V. Another possibility is that a bad control board could be the problem, especially if the control transformer is integrated into the board. Another possibility is that you could have a loose control wire connection somewhere.?

The problem with a liberal arts degree is that you just can't get a liberal arts degree? only. College would be much more worthwhile if they eliminated all of the useless classes they make you take to get a degree. I would like to know that my doctor spent most of? his college time studying things like anatomy and physiology, chemistry, and pharmacology; not useless crap like speech, literature and history. Before you have a surgery, make sure you ask your doctor what percentage of his credit hours were devoted to medical classes. You don't need a doctor who can recite Shakespeare.

cracking the books. I left the service and went to work with York/Borg Warner factory service as a 3 year apprentice. Had 2 more years of apprenticeship school along with OJT. I earned my Journeymans rating after? that. The college experience helped alot during that time. I've gone thru countless schools (not coffee and doghnut classes) to keep up with the advances in the field, PLC schools, just about anything you could think of. it has been a constant 45 years of learning for. cont.

I didn't mean that college was only way to go. i meant that going to college has been proved to better a person's life no matter what profession he or she is in. It certainly has helped me advance in my career as an industrial refrigeration technician. This field requires constant book learning. OJT is a major part but theory and keeping up with the advances? is a must. I've never seen a good tech that hasn't studied the books. I went thru military tech schools then OJT and more.

I tried that product on some LL filter dryer replacements that were rusting and leaking. It looked to me as if the torch had originally burned the paint off the filters and eventually caused a rust out leak. I have seen many filter dryers with the? paint burned off. With this the paint is fine. I tried this right after you posted the original version of this video and no leaks out of the 10 I did. They are R 22 units.

Very interesting. This may be the future of copper soldering . We already use glue for welding PVC. If they can make one as strong as silver? solder then you may be on to something Dr Z. More testing will be needed though :)

Hello Dr Z, I knew absolutly nothing about HVAC/electricity/brazing before I went to school for it. The HVAC program was 2 year program, crammed into 9 months, which was great considering I needed a job. The teachers did a great job with getting everone prepared for their new career. I kinda wish they went into the troubleshooting a bit more, but on the job experience during? the summer months, you learn REAL quick. What are your thoughts on the new Trane air handlers? I HATE THEM lol

Yes, you have to learn on the job. Well that's what helped me anyway. Anyway Dr. Z, the secondary windings on the transformer burned up on my friends furnace. I can't seem to find out what caused it. Usually the problem I've run in ]to is, the 24VAC wires that energize the contactor on the condenser are severed and have shorted because they touch. I don't want to put a new transformer in there, because I know it will burn up. Any suggestions? or corrective criticism will be appreciated. Thank you

I did light Heating and Cooling. I met a guy from Germany who does Refrigeration, I have worked with him for the last three years. Just on refrigeration. After that experance Heating and Cooling is so basic. You might fix a furnace once. You will always be called back to a resturant or buisness for refrigeration. If all you can do is? hvac do it. The modules on the back of ECMs and X13s aren't really variable frequency drives. ECMs are more like a stepper motor in the way the? output power from the module is pulsed through the windings. An ECM take single phase AC power, puts it through a rectifier, a capacitor bank, and an inverter section just like a VFD does, but the ECM is a 3-phase permanent magnet DC motor. ECM output is pure DC, and it doesn't vary the frequency, it just pulses the power through the windings sequentially.

Here in Washington I can but Either a (motor) or the Drive depending on what I need. We sell? American standard and ive replaced about 5 of the drives. Never had to order one all have been in stock. The drives dont really go back either. They lose their programming. They can be Re-flashed at a wholesale house if they have the program. Thats what we do if they are still under warrenty.

im starting to see more and more of? those electronic drives go bad. the new inverter units from fujitsu, etc... they are VFD type setups. Most likely if anything, the actual IGBT transistor goes bad/shorts. If that motor drive was actually not potted in epoxy (moisture/copy protection) it would actually be repairable. at least to me.

You can buy similar rated a/c's without digging wells, running all the extra parts that are bound to fail someday involved in geothermal. I pay less to? heat and cool than just the interest on a geothermal system. I make more money on a 2.5% CD than a geothermal will save. Everybody wants to ignore ROI.

I think GE now offers a repair kit for their control board. It was commonly a failed thermistor. BTW these things make an awesome permanent magnet generator with the 3/4hp version? capable of 400 watts max output. Chk out at the otherpower forum @ Fieldlines(dot)com. Search for "ECM"

Sorry if I miss? understood your question in regards to the ECM motors and replacement control heads. I know that not all ECM motors can be repaired I was just trying to referance GE motors that have been installed in Trane & Carrier units, I also know that depending on what type of motor you have you can get control heads from your sales rep or supply house as long as they know what they are doing, I have had problems getting parts sometimes when the counter guy has no idea whats going on.
