Answering my own question about blocked accumulators, much googling finds that yes, other people have had such a prob. Since the accumulator is essentially just open (supposedly) tubing, the culprit is likely to be debris from another source lodged in the tubing. That much debris suggests catastrophic failure in the near future, so it's a case of repair costing more than replacement. Just FYI.

Thanks for another informative vid, Doc Z. Anybody want to comment on a Carrier hotel heat pump package that freezes from the bottom of the accumulator to the compressor? It's all 1/2" tubing to the compressor, nothing else. After much wondering I put an access valve on each side of the accumulator. Sure enough, over 100# drop, the accumulator is blocked. Only one problem. How can the accumulator be blocked? There's nothing in there to clog up. I must be missing something, but what?

You need a restrictor at the indoor coil and one at the outdoor coil. The restrictor can be a TXV, AXV, or any fixed restrictor like a piston or capillary tubes.

It would really be more trouble than it's worth. You'd have to add a reversing valve and another TXV and check valves. It really doesn't make sense to do it unless you're a student of the trade an are wanting to experiment.

I can't disagree with any of the products you endorse. I'm partial to the Energizer Professional LED head light. The headband has a healthy elastic band that holds up to a lot of sweat and abuse. The truth is: there is no perfect LED light that suits every service technician. You do a wonderful job of testing industry product offerings. You're still the standard that we're judged by...keep up the great work!

@DrZarkloff Yes but typically you should shoot for a maximum .5" water column design static on the blower. Usually unless it is a small simple system you will find that you will go into the grey area between .5" and 1" of water column. Be ware most blowers will stall before you get to 1" water column. ECM motors are making it easier and will compensate for some design error but the same rules apply. They will fail as you approach 1"

@robw1031 The ROT I have heard is to increase the size to the next size when reading a sheet metal ductulator when using flex or ductboard. If you pull flex straight and tight it will perform nearly as well as metal. The ductulator from ACCA has flex, duct board and duct liner.

@ComfortAirCompany I agree, It is my experience that it is a prerequisite to be a installer before you become a service tech. Sadly most installers are little more than box cutters. The guys I learned from 20 years ago are still using rule of thumb to size equipment an ducts. The best installers come full circle from installer to tech and back to installer.

@THEHVACTECH101 No, this is a common misconception. Friction Rate is not the same as Static Pressure. You are measuring static pressure with your magnehelic gauge or monometer. You can go one step further and measure velocity pressure with your gauge if you have a pitot tube. Static pressure is like that in a balloon. Total pressure = static pressure + velocity pressure Friction rate is a way to assign a scale of resistance per 100' of equivalent feet of duct.

I realized after I reread my comment to you that it sounded like I was bustin your balls. I apologize. I just thought that you gave just enough information for newbies and a lot of oldies to get the wrong idea about duct design. You did you use the word design when you probably should exchange the word design with sizing. It would have been nice if you would have been a good idea to touch on velocity limits that would at least keep the rule of thumb guys closer to the ball park.

Hey Dr Z. Long time no talk. LOL! I was wondering who talked you into trying the Snake Oil? LOL! Seriously that's what we called it (funny that someone else already said "snake oil" here). I was surprised NuCalgon was behind this stuff. Only 4 ounces of that can is the oil. I have a hard time believing that 4 ounces could be dispersed throughout a system with a massive amount of surface area. OK, I'm now towards the end of your video and realize why you are trying the stuff. :-)

If you get a chance please give us an update in a couple of weeks, to see how it has performed. Have you thought about getting a data logger and getting run data for a week or so before and then again for a couple of weeks after installation to see if you actually show a savings.

Hi DrZarkloff, Thanks for all the fantastic videos. I have a question regarding oil return on a mini-split air conditioner (called "split system" in Australia). From what I've read in textbooks all pipework must slope downward (at a particular angle) to ensure that oil is pushed back along the the low side pipe to ensure good compressor lubrication. I've asked a few installer over here and they don't seem to worry too much about it. Just like to hear your thoughts on the subject. Thanks. Greg.

Hey Dr. Z, As you can probably tell from past emails, I'm a non-HVAC professional fan. I'm just fascinated by AC (I don't know why!). I'm going to get a couple of the Esco DVD's (Basics and 410A) just so I can learn more. But the heat pump curriculum doesn't look like it's actually available for purchase. I'm about to buy a new house with a heat pump so I am definitely interested in getting something for heat pump education. Any ideas where I can find something? Thanks! Happy 4th.

About the comment on the NATE don't you have to have a min of 2 years on the field to be able to take re program... That's what our instructor has told us...

Hey, I've got a couple ESCO certifications but I live in Minnesota where quite a few companies require NATE. My instructor still insists on us taking the ESCO exams because he says that its going to "take over", but I was wondering if it's really going to happen or should I start studying for the NATE exams?

@aalderman22 When I took the 410-a they wouldnt send me the cert untill I faxed or mailed proof of my 608. The PM tech also worked the same way. Also instead of dropping the $20 for each card you can just print out the seperate cards and laminate them yourself for nothing.

DrZarkloff, shouldn't the refrigerant jug be hooked up and be ready before connecting the hose to the service valve on the system? and that all hoses should be purged especially before front seating the system service valve? I am not correcting you sir because I had learned the safety practices from your videos. It was just that I saw you had connected the blue hose and than cracked/front seated the service valve without purging the line. Thank you.

We install all kind of brands and I can see that some brands come with the filter drier to be install, others like american standard does not come with a filter drier. should I get a filter drier for those who does not came with it? or these brands come with a internal filter drier?? if that, which brands come and which do not come with filter drier.

@DrZarkloff Can't complain too much, August will be 31 years and I'm still in the game, though slowed quite a bit. Will be 51 soon, so not too shabby I guess. Would have taken better care had I known back then what I do now.
