@MrTERRYD55 I'd look for heavy rust. If you find any then you might want to check it for leaks. Also, I always replace the accumulator when I replace the compressor.
By: MrTERRYD55. on 27 Aug 10, 02:03:19
Dr.Z how would you determine if a a ccumulator is bad in a heat pump condenser.

What is the correct way to troubleshoot a reversing valve and what is the sequence of operation for two stage a/cs?????
By: DrZarkloff. on 03 Jun 10, 23:01:47
@Mooseguy15 A heat pump is an air conditioning system that can cool and heat by use of the compressor.
By: Mooseguy15. on 31 May 10, 20:00:38
Is a heat pump a compressor?
By: DrZarkloff. on 24 Apr 10, 13:45:36
@thereceman The defrost thermostat stops the defrost cycle when the sensor notices that the condensing coil has a raised temperature.
By: thereceman. on 24 Apr 10, 00:51:44
does the defrost thermostat denergize the compressor when it senses high head pressure?
By: DrZarkloff. on 09 Mar 10, 23:26:14
Yes. Some commercial heat pumps use solenoid valves instead of a reversing valve.
By: jhema45. on 08 Mar 10, 12:56:28
DrZ can we use some alternate solution instead of using reversing can we use also a solenoid valve??

Many new R-410a systems come with a separate service port on the suction side for this reason.
By: r247yan. on 24 Nov 09, 02:41:31
can you make a video on how to charge a heat pump in cold weather.. I hear you have to switch hoses etc and put one on true suction line etc.. With 410a

Answering my own question about blocked accumulators, much googling finds that yes, other people have had such a prob. Since the accumulator is essentially just open (supposedly) tubing, the culprit is likely to be debris from another source lodged in the tubing. That much debris suggests catastrophic failure in the near future, so it's a case of repair costing more than replacement. Just FYI.

Thanks for another informative vid, Doc Z. Anybody want to comment on a Carrier hotel heat pump package that freezes from the bottom of the accumulator to the compressor? It's all 1/2" tubing to the compressor, nothing else. After much wondering I put an access valve on each side of the accumulator. Sure enough, over 100# drop, the accumulator is blocked. Only one problem. How can the accumulator be blocked? There's nothing in there to clog up. I must be missing something, but what?
By: DrZarkloff. on 29 Sep 09, 20:33:17
You need a restrictor at the indoor coil and one at the outdoor coil. The restrictor can be a TXV, AXV, or any fixed restrictor like a piston or capillary tubes.
By: richiemabie. on 29 Sep 09, 19:21:39
Stupid question, wouldn't you need a txv in a heat pump!
By: DrZarkloff. on 25 Sep 09, 19:46:00
Not yet. I'll probably make an ice maker video one of these days. Thanks.
By: DrZarkloff. on 25 Sep 09, 19:45:29
Yes.

Hey Dr Z, do you have an ice maker video yet?
By: edgardpb1. on 26 Aug 09, 00:32:25
can i put a txv in a heat pump?
By: DrZarkloff. on 25 Aug 09, 21:32:35
It would really be more trouble than it's worth. You'd have to add a reversing valve and another TXV and check valves. It really doesn't make sense to do it unless you're a student of the trade an are wanting to experiment.
By: fedders4. on 24 Aug 09, 22:11:23
can i convert my window a/c to Heat/Cool by adding a reversing valve and new thermostat?
By: nucleolo. on 04 Aug 09, 20:41:55
Interesting, as usual!
