I fly one of these, I wouldn't mind attempting some of these stunts but saftey comes first. In a way I wish I had an airfield all to myself with no other aircraft so I could really practice and learn to handle the r22. I can fly reasonablely but got plenty? more hours to go. Since i've been learning to fly, I really respect these guys much more than someone that hasn't tried to fly.

@rapidcolt WOW 170 hours, Thats a lot of flying, I've done about 14 so far? in a r22. I'll soon be going solo, practised loads of different exercises, Slope landings, Engine off auto to power recovery. Lots of emergencys. I seemed to be able to hover from day 1 so its a good advantage. I enjoy flying it, although I hated it one time when I had about 30-35 knott winds and downwind and crosswind were such a handful with the tail rotor effectiveness.

I? learned to play video games with my left hand because my favorite video game has always been Donkey Kong, and the joy stick is on the left and the jump button on the right. I am however right handed when I write... but whenever I play video games I play left handed because I have more dexterity. I was concerned this might mess me up with helicopters, but it did not. It does NOT matter if you are right or left handed! You just need to practice & build muscle memory. So no worries... just fly!

All major airports are controlled but there are many smaller airports that aren't, I just happen to live an hour? away from the airport in Southport so it was here, Blackpool or Barton near Manchester. (and they are all in controlled air space of one sort or another!)

I learnt to fly on? the R22 when they didn't have correlating throttle. Pain in the backside. But I got used to it eventually. They are a good machine when you get used to them

Well done video! I'm just starting my rotorcraft add-on rating in the R22 and I wish I could track the centerline so expertly. I found out, for all you fellow beginners, that the cyclic doesn't really? get "moved"; just "nudged", if that at all. The less one moves the sticks, the easier it is to control. Actually, you only have to apply pressure to the cyclic and think about where you want the helo to be. Good video, and a beautiful landscape too! Are all the airports in the UK controlled?

It is designed as a dual control ( or at least only as one cyclic emerging? from the centre) with a handle for both the student and the instructor.... In this case i'm obviously on my own so the dual controls can stay in... If i had a passenger they (the left controls) would have been removed...

@superphap2000 Not smart to slide on grass sometimes, due to a possible forward rollover, hence, we only did the failure, not the recovery! Flew this copter for 500 hours in Denver at 5,863msl field elevation, and DA's of 9,500+. You'd probably be surprised what it will do when flown smoothly up there! Max. Takeoff is about like you descibed, the "Screw up", going against the horsepower, shows some? of the vertcal capability of this machine with two people in it! Any videos of you flying a R-22?

skilled, but not necessarily smooth, kind of aggressive at times. I didn't see the recovery for the "simulated tail rotor failure,"? other than using more tail rotor. the max takeoff seemed to be HIGE for a mere second and a half, the rest forward flight. i would dare you to try some of these maneuvers on a high D.A. day.

That was very skilled flying! I usually? fly Cessna 182's and 172's airplanes but I've had the chance in R22's and Bell 407's and the r22 is a lightweight fun aircraft. It's amazing how sensitive it is to me, but you have it mastered!

Why did you destroy such a good lesson with your campaign to make us move to your "attempt at fancy intro that takes way to long to get to the video" Just be the CFI and not? the producer. You are a great CFI, stick to that. I like the old one except for what the Garywj6 says! Really clean this up.

@Steevee5k the real r22 has a low inertia rotor system, you have to fully lower the collective in less than 1.1 seconds if the engine fails? or the rotor rpm drops below 80% many real r22's have been lost in this way. If the rotor rpm drops much below 80% you cannot recover rotor rpm and will drop like a stone, the main rotor suffers a blow back which chops the tail boom off.

I´ve tried time and again to do an autorotation using an R 22 (FS 2004) but I keep crashing into the ground, due to the fact, that my rotor speed drops too quickly, and so does the heli, whatever I do. I thought the airstream would keep the rotor going, but? somehow it doesn´t. It makes me wonder, what I could be missing. For example what about the rotor-clutch? Or is there anything else I should consider?

Well, I agree with the comment about the tail rotor, but also the speed of descent, and the severity of the flare etc is such that I would say you don't have a huge margin (if any) for error. Certainly not without sustaining some serious damage to the airframe. I much prefer the MT-03 type power off landing, which we? do all the time, it is much gentler, and there is a huge margin for error. Give me a commercially built autogyro (gyroplane, gyrocopter) any day!

Impressive and pushing the limits? of the a/c and pilots - especially the last one - looked a bit hard on the airframe. Also, don't assume everyone who instructs on R22's can perform those manoeuvres. Timing has to be perfect, with no margin for errors.

@specializedheli I can see how the risk is mitigated by only partially reducing the power.? Also, most real engine failures are not a sudden stop but a degradation of power that may turn into a full failure, so chopping the throttle is not only not as safe, but not as realistic for training purposes. And finally, if you can pull this off in a 22, you can pull it off in just about anything. I am sure those pilots are getting some good training out of it.

@marialanger I think the point of all our autorotation practice is to add the control movements involved to muscle memory. So that in the event of an actual emergency requiring an auto our reaction times are reduced as much as possible and the actions required are automatic.? But I agree with you, anyone can do an auto when it is planned and you initiate it.

It's good to see videos proving that helicopters can safely land with engine failure/partial engine failure. But I question the real-life aspects of these demonstrations. All helicopter pilots practice autorotations, but don't we always "set up" with ideal conditions beforehand? Yes, you've proven it's possible, but only with known set up conditions and the pilot ready for the maneuver. An engine failure at 200 feet? is not likely to have such a happy ending when the pilot doesn't expect it.

I hit a small bird in an R22 in Tennessee once in spring 2008. While it nearly gave me a heart attack, once I landed I noticed that there was hardly any sign of it at all. A tiny tiny bit of blood about 3mm X 1mm on one blade and that was it. No damage. VERY scary thing to see coming? at you at the last second though.

@cessnaclub Hi! No, it's not a National Park where I flown. So, I don't need any? clearance. Theoretically,you shouldn't fly under 500ft in case of emergency, but sometimes.... ;-). There are some National Park on Vancouver Island, but is stricly forbidden to fly on it just few feet above the ground. About birdstrike, I've not experience of this (fortunatly!) but I think if it's a seagul, or some stuff like that, you can continue to fly (to land!). For a Eagle: no. ;-) Have a good flight!

Hi mate great video and thanks for sharing but I was wondering how are you allowed to fly that low or did you just get some kind of a clearance or so??? Im assuming? its some kind of a national park. Also with a R22 I have always wonderd how they hold up to a bird strike,obvioulsly its not a good thing to happend but are the blades strong enough to shop through a few birds and still be flyable?? Im only asking cause I hit a seagul in a C210 and it tore a hole in the leading edge. Happy Days
