The picture looks like a Moblie home unit, the coil is above the heating high voltage elements and blower, it needs a really big trap because its a high static or pressure blower!! (my money is on a coleman unit), they should keep a deep P trap inside and cut in a tee above it for cleaning like in your video, I have seen outdoor p traps freeze when they are deep because? the water dosent evap. before winter! But it depends on your climate!!

Okay so you are an angel.........we had a leak in the AC closet and thankfully l picked up on this due to my accute? hearing. I was driving my husband nuts telling him that l could hear this dripping in the AC unit. Not to give up on anything l came on here and found your video....wow you should have seen the pipe gush after l cleared the outside of it. Thanks for saving us a fortune...maybe my husband will thank us both some day....me for my determination and you for video.

@ibunregistered? Yes, but it will refill quickly.

@DrZarkloff If you vacuum the trap dry, won't it will suck cold air into the system or blow hot air out whenever? the air handler runs for heat?

The trap in this case had to be tall enough to keep dirt from filling the pipe. It freezes here in Northern Florida a few times in the Winter.? We have lots of p-traps. I've never seen any around here freeze. I suggested to Idahodad to vacuum the water before the heating season just as a precautionary measure.
By: derrickb1974. on 18 Apr 09, 11:24:03
Out of curiosity DrZarloff, why must the trap be so tall? Also, Do you mean to physically hook up a wet/dry vac to the? condensate pipe outside and suck out the water in the trap before you turn on the heater. Or is this just to remove water in the trap so it won't freeze in northern climates and possibly crack the PVC pipe trap. Thanks

Having knowledge of plumbing helps the HVAC tech. It's important to have an air gap downstream of the trap. This allows condensation to continue flowing downhill, even though the termination point is submerged in water. The standpipe for the air? gap should extend above the level of the drainpan. That would allow condensation to spill out of the secondary drain. I prefer to see the standard P-trap. It's shorter and easier to clean, and it can withstand the .1" WC static pressure.

Thanks. It was great to? see you. Please let me know how you decide.
By: DrZarkloff. on 17 Apr 09, 09:05:09
The opportunity gave me a chance to make a? video, anyhow.
By: mechanicwarrior20. on 16 Apr 09, 23:31:09
in HVAC it's to keep the pressure up in the evaporator section... It also prevents condensation?
By: jenko701. on 16 Apr 09, 21:32:50
Why do we need a trap . in plumbing the trap is to keep out bad gases . no bad gas here.?
By: DrZarkloff. on 16 Apr 09, 20:13:34
You should always vacuum the condensate drain? before the heating season.
By: idahodad1. on 16 Apr 09, 14:08:11
Wouldn't the condensate freeze in the winter with? that trap outside?
